Background
Pong lake, also known as Maharana Pratap lake, was created when a dam was constructed in 1974–75 at a place called Pong in Kangra. This lake is the largest manmade wetlands of Northern India. Its area varies between 125 sq km–220 sq km.
Pong lake was declared as a Wildlife sanctuary, first by an intention notification in 1983, and then with a final notification in 1999. The Wildlife Sanctuary is divided into two Wildlife Ranges, namely, Nagrota Surlan and Dhameta.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate
Change, Government of India declared the lake as a Wetland of National Importance in 1994. The lake is the first wetland in the state to be given the status of a “Ramsar site”during an International forum in Spain in 1992.

A Ramsar site is a wetland that features in the List of Wetlands of International Importance, also known as the Ramsar List. The Ramsar List was established by the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty that was adopted at Ramsar, Iran, in 1971. The convention came into force in 1975.
